On behalf of the NPCC Foundation, sincerest thank to everyone who supported the annual Astral Media Have A Heart Niagara Radiothon that benefits more than 3000 children with physical, behavioural or communicative disabilities from all 12 municipalities in Regional Niagara. Financial contributions, volunteer commitments from several people and the excellent work of Astral Media Niagara’s management and staff both off and on the air all contributed to the outstanding results. At the end of the broadcast day, the total was $154,100 and as in past years, additional contributions continue to come in.

It was great to see a consistency in the number of people who faithfully remain members of the Have a Heart monthly club, and one friend of the NPCC Foundation who has been a regular donor over the past number of years visited the Centre during the broadcast to present a cheque of $15,000.

Centre and School staff did a superb job in ensuring the radiothon’s success and numerous people have commented about the wonderful, heartfelt stories that are told during the broadcast. We keep telling people publicly that because of caring Centre and school staff, miracles happen every day, and the proof of the pudding comes through loud and clear in events such as the Radiothon.

We are very fortunate to have management and staff at Astral Media Niagara who are totally committed to the Centre and are very passionate about delivering the Centre’s message and accomplishments on the airwaves. They are a real credit to the Niagara community.

-LAST UPDATED MAY 8, 2012

Ryan lives in Wainfleet. He was born 10 weeks prematurely. His mother calls the Children’s Centre a godsend. At 2 1/2 he could not crawl and barely had the strength to stand up. Ryan enrolled in the Centre’s physiotherapy program and by the end of the year he could walk upright with the assistance of a walker. Ryan’s mother still recalls the expression on his face, a gigantic smile, when he walked down the Centre’s hallway for the very first time. Ryan is a great testimonial ambassador for the NPCC and will be attending his first year of high school this September.

Drew is 6 and lives in Niagara Falls. He was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth. A very lovable, happy little guy who wakes up everyday to try his very best at conquering a new skill. Skills we take for granted… Drew sat up at 10 months and walked at 27 months. At age 6 new words are coming every day and he relies less on sign language to communicate. It takes a village to raise a child. NPCC is that village and we are so grateful that Drew has had the opportunity to have this early intervention. Our children require this support and thrive in this inclusive environment where all efforts and achievements are celebrated.

STORY BY: maryanne.firth@sunmedia.ca

April Jeffs came with her game face on.

The Wainfleet mayor and captain of the Niagara South hockey team came ready to play on Sunday, or perhaps ready to fight.

During the first period of the inaugural Niagara South vs. Niagara North Municipal Face Off Charity Event, Jeffs gave the crowd a show when she threw down her gloves during a face off and picked a friendly fight with Niagara North player and West Lincoln Mayor Doug Joyner.

Leaving Joyner with his jersey over his head in a matter of seconds, Jeffs claimed victory, throwing her hands in the air as the crowd roared.

It was a day all in fun for the mayors, councillors and chief administrative officers who strapped on their skates to support the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre.

And while it seems a good time was had by all, with plenty of pranks — including multiple pucks and overturned goalie nets — happening on ice, it was Niagara South which ultimately dominated the game, defeating their Niagara North counterparts 7-3.

The southern team will have its name engraved on a plaque that will be up for grabs annually at Wainfleet’s new staple event.

“I’m happy with the turnout,” Jeffs said as she looked out over the busy stands at Wainfleet Arena. “I hope it gets bigger every year.”

Jim Marino was also pleased to see so many seats filled.

The executive director of Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation was taken aback by the amount of enthusiasm displayed by both the players and the crowd.

“Miracles happen every day” at the centre, Marino said. “These people are all a part of those miracles.”

Marcia Boros knows all about miracles.

Her son Ryan, now 14, has been visiting the children’s centre since he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at two-and-a-half. He’s made amazing progress and now not only chairs Wainfleet’s youth advisory council, but also dropped the puck at Sunday’s event.

“It’s nice to see the community come together for such a worthy cause,” Marcia said.

“There are so many people in the region who would be lost if there wasn’t a place like (the centre) here.”

“It’s a truly amazing organization.”

Providing support for the NPCC is part of the reason why Wainfleet youth Laryssa Merzanis put on her winter gear and headed to the arena Sunday.

The other part was to, of course, cheer on her township’s fearless leader.

“Go April!” Merzanis screamed from the crowd, waving a sign of encouragement for the sole female on the ice.

“It’s hilarious,” she said of the game. “Very entertaining.”

The hockey game was followed by a public skate with municipal officials, as well as beer and chili served up by Wainfleet firefighters.
