Your Will
Making a bequest through your Will is the most common, straightforward way to arrange a planned gift. We recommend that you use professional assistance in the preparation of your Will, as an improperly written Will may be challenged and your intentions not followed.
You may choose to provide for a specific sum or percentage of your estate to go to the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation upon your death. You may also make a “residual” bequest which, once all your beneficiaries have been taken care of, would leave the balance of your estate to the Foundation.
Should you wish to leave an unrestricted gift, the suggested wording is:
“I give, devise and bequeath to the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation the sum of $, or percent of my estate (or the residue), to be used for any purposes approved by the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation Board of Trustees.”
If you wish to specify how your gift is to be used, the suggested wording is:
“I give, devise and bequeath to the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation the sum of $ or percent of my estate (or the residue), to be used for the following purpose(s).”(set of purpose).
Life Insurance
A very practical method of making a significant contribution to the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation is through a life insurance policy. The advantage to you and your family is that an insurance gift does not interfere with your primary assets and does not impact on your will.
The simplest method of using life insurance to make a gift is to donate a paid up policy, making the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation a beneficiary of a policy which you already fully own. Other individuals will take this route when the original beneficiary of a policy is no longer in need of insurance support, i.e., when your children are fully grown and supporting themselves or when you and your spouse are already comfortably protected. In this case, a tax receipt can be written for the full cash surrender value of the policy.
If you prefer, you can take out a new policy with the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation as the owner and beneficiary. In this case, all premiums paid become tax deductible, as donations. It is best to contact the Foundation when setting up this sort of policy so that we can make arrangements for income tax receipts.
A Gift of Property
The Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation is able to accept gifts of property, whether commercial, residential or recreational in nature. Individuals can offer their home or cottage as a gift to the Foundation while they are still living, with the provision that the family may use the property until their death.
The Foundation also welcomes gifts of artwork, equipment, stocks and bonds or similar assets. An income tax receipt can be offered for the fair market value of the property or asset.
A Special Trust Fund
You may wish to establish a trust fund with your gift. A “trust” allow you to assign interest income to your loved ones during their lifetimes. Upon your death and that of the beneficiaries, the capital is transferred to the Foundation. Annual income may be directed to a particular department at the Centre or left to the discretion of the Foundation Board of Trustees for determining its use.
Memorial Gifts
The Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation can be designated as a recipient of memorial gifts while making funeral arrangements. Memorial gifts can also be designated to specific uses within the Children’s Centre.
Upon the death of a loved one, many families request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre Foundation. Special memorial cards are available in most funeral homes for this purpose.
An Annuity
An Annuity is similar to a trust with the income paid to yourself during your lifetime. This allows you to make a significant monetary gift and continue to receive income from that amount. You would also receive an immediate tax receipt based on the final estimated value of your gift. Consistent income and tax advantages are the benefits of this form of giving.
Designating Your Gift
Perhaps you would like your gift, used toward a specific department of the Children’s Centre, or a specific type of equipment. We will be glad to honour your request.
Designated gifts will be used to purchase equipment, or enhance or expand services of the department you specify. To ensure your wishes are understood, please contact the Foundation office to discuss your designated gift. Gifts which are not designated will be used toward the greatest need, at the discretion of the Foundation Board of Trustees.
